GRATITUDE MONTH: DAY 29: “Gratitude opens you up to receive. It allows healing and blessings to come into your life.” ― Eileen Anglin

Recognition that WE are not the source of good in our lives is the first step in learning to receive blessings and abundance in ways that fit the spiritual path we are here to embark upon.

How wonderful is it that WE, the hopeless dope fiends and drunks (amongst other things!), with our crippling dependence on control, manipulation and deception; should be the recipients of so great a truth in this lifetime?

We get smashed into smithereens, if we are fortunate, so that we will have open spaces in order to learn and grow. We must be open to receive the teachings of recovery and healing. It is NOT ever going to be about not using or drinking.

I believe we get to do this thing with just as much smashing as we receive on the way in. If we are not as smashed and broken as we need to be, we will get some more if we continue to strive for a spiritual way of life, versus the Egoic demands of money, property and prestige.

Okay! So, now we are smashed to bits, and we must look around to see what the gifts are in that. At first, this seems impossible. The wail of every newcomer is how terrible their lives are right now. No job, homeless, wreckage of relationships with everyone we have ever known, blah, blah, blah.

Great! This is the best starting point! So, now we can rebuild on firmer bedrock, spiritual principles. All that shit can go at any moment, but the spiritual stuff is here to stay.

As it says in the BB, “Job or no job, home or no home, wife or no wife…” You get the drift. SO, if we have any of THAT left, our chances diminish. Okay. But we can still do this.

To the degree that we recognize that WE are not the authors of this story and stay the F… out of writing it. It ain’t our story, it is the story of the Universal Power and how we are here to serve THAT. Okay…hard to grasp for some of us, impossible for others. Until we DO, we are not grateful for anything. We just sit in the corner and suck our thumb and whine! Geez! Get over it!

So, there will be no healing for you, no opening into which the sunlight of the spirit can enter. Tough shit, Cupcake…you created this. And you are going to stay stuck in it until you move past your BS story and get on with finding the Grace of even being able to read.

Today I wrote all about books and paper and pens and keyboards and words and language and writing and reading…omg! It was amazing! I forget how much I really, really, REALLY love that stuff….wow! So, there is always more to be grateful for. Always more to learn. Get out of your corner and help someone who has less than you…less life, less resources, less recovery…and become grateful, or not, your boat to miss…I got mine…

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
