INTEGRITY MONTH: DAY 19: “Change is an anxiety-arousing business because whenever you make a change, you can’t make only one. There is no guarantee where it will stop.”― Harriet Lerner

When we begin this journey, it is with the idea that we don’t want to live the life we were in the midst of at the time.

Little do we know what life will look like as we progress through this recovery process. The changes that will be made in our outlooks (where all change must begin!), in our attitudes, in our behaviors, and in the way life looks over time are incredible.

A tiny step at a time, a moment at a time, we become completely shifted in all aspects of life. If we don’t it is due to some kind of adherence, on our part, to an old idea or paradigm that we refused to process through these steps.

The only reason this quote talks about “anxiety-arousing” is because anxiety is our focus on being afraid of losing control of life. Yeah, like we ever had any! Our attempts to control life are only created to keep it the same and constant, which is a complete denial of life. We cannot be free of this fear and our own need for control until we jump off the cliff and let life take US where it wants us to go.

Otherwise, all we do is stand up in the face of the tsunami that is life and refuse to budge. That will not go well, ever! So, we must learn to surf these waves of change and have fun with them, because they ARE going to come, no matter what we think about them, and no matter how we feel about them. The best thing we can do is just know that it is ALL out of our hands. We have NO control to exert, so get on with living and stop trying to stop life from going on about its business. Anything else will just make us crazy.

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
