LOVE MONTH: DAY 2: “When I say it’s you I like; I’m talking about that part of you that knows that life is far more than anything you can ever see or hear or touch. That deep part of you that allows you to stand for those things without which humankind cannot survive. Love that conquers hate, peace that rises triumphant over war, and justice that proves more powerful than greed.”― Fred Rogers

Step 12 is all about service and “having had a spiritual awakening as THE result…” Not one of the results, but THE result. It is the only purpose of these steps.

Not to do all the things we give credit to the steps to do for us, but the only thing that will happen if we have done these things with devotion and persistence. We will become spiritually awake. THEN, and only then, are we fit to carry this message and be of service to ALL of God’s other kids. That is the reason for this work.

And every single one of us is capable of being and doing these things. But, the caveat is always the same…”The ego must be smashed.” Completely, totally, and without a shred of self left. We cannot do the work of love, which is selfless and without attachment to outcomes or circumstances. We have to let go of things of material and personal value before we are completely capable of this kind of love. It is dangerous to do the work of love without those conditions being removed.

There is a great deal of pain and suffering that comes in the name of LOVE. Think about it. And as long as we cling to Ego, we are going to impart more of that. We will be manipulative, dishonest, and full of self. It does not carry the message of unconditional love. That is a task most of us are not prepared to perform. And we should step aside until we can deliver that to each and every man and woman we wish to serve, in any fashion. This includes our families and friends.

When we are fit to be of service to that Universal Power, our message will be strong and bright. Until then, we should be ever mindful of who and what we truly are. Working toward that ultimate end.

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
