FREEDOM MONTH: DAY 11: “We become slaves the moment we hand the keys to the definition of reality entirely over to someone else, whether it is a business, an economic theory, a political party, the White House, Newsworld or CNN.”― B. W. Powe

Yes! We get to define our own reality, based on who we are and how we view the world. I can say that I seldom have the same view as most folks.

I interface very little with the world of “facts,” because I have found most of them to be rather arbitrary in nature, or even downright skewed. I remember a time in my early recovery when I thought I knew what the “facts” were. I was SO wrong. I do not. I get to be the one to state my own reality and my own way of seeing life.

This is the greatest freedom of all! While certain mathematical equations may be true today, I am pretty sure that every fact of which we are so certain now will be proven false at some point in the future. I believe the most important freedom I have is that to change my perspective on any situation, which will almost always change my belief about it.

I learned all of that here, with you guys, doing these steps. Seeing life from a higher and greater perspective allows me to shift all of my previous beliefs about everything…absolutely everything. I can see all the good in the Universe when I want to focus on that. I choose, every day, to believe myself to be the most blessed creature in the Universe, and guess what! All the evidence I gather throughout the course of my day supports only that! Yay!

I am so grateful for all the Ego-bashing we get in this process, because without it, I would still be believing the world was out to get me and that I was the most pitiful creature, severely punished all the time, that was ever born. It ain’t like that no more folks!

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
