COURAGE MONTH: DAY 23: “Courage is about learning how to function despite the fear, to put aside your instincts to run or give in completely to the anger born from fear. Courage is about using your brain and your heart when every cell of your body is screaming at you to fight or flee – and then following through on what you believe is the right thing to do.”― Jim Butcher

This quote is saying something important. That courage is really not listening to Ego and going with the quiet voice that tells us what is right in our hearts…what I believe is God’s voice, God’s will for me. That is a great deal less likely to win medals, but will always be the best outcome, nonetheless. What most people in our culture consider to be heroism may not be so.

I genuinely believe that heroes are those who take actions that are in the best and highest interest of others without hesitation. When we are able to put aside our selfish demands on life and act in accordance with the highest and best of others, we are truly courageous. When we listen to the voice of our consciences and not our heads. We are going to always act more closely aligned with principle than not.

I love the idea of being in courage. It is a wonderful sense of being on the right path and the right road. What a great way to live!

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
