COURAGE MONTH: DAY 9: “If you are driven by fear, anger or pride nature will force you to compete. If you are guided by courage, awareness, tranquility and peace, nature will serve you.”― Amit Ray

We are not here to compete with each other. That is a cultural distortion as well. We grow up in an environment that teaches us to compete in classes, to compete within our families, to compete at sports and everything else. It is all work of Ego.

Life gave us skills and abilities, as well as shortcomings and situations to overcome. That is what life is all about. As we develop and hone our skills, we are given more and more opportunities to grow and become who we are here to be. There is no competition.

When we work inside Ego, we are always fighting for our spot, believing that when others succeed, it is at our detriment. That we lose somehow. That is not true. When someone succeeds and finds happiness, it is an opportunity to become more certain of our own path to success. Sadly, we are in error about what constitutes success. It almost always looks good on the outside, but is covering up what is essential and missing on the inside.

What do you believe about success? That will tell you what you are up against and whether or not you are in Ego or spirit in defining these terms. My experience is that when I walk the path that is specifically mine, I am greeted by a great deal of evidence that it is right for me. Life throws itself at my feet, and I am served by nature. It is beautiful!

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
