HOPE MONTH: DAY 7: “Me and you, we got more yesterday than anybody. We need some kind of tomorrow.” ― Toni Morrison

Yes! We all have so much story around our lives. What if we just focus on this day and the building of a new life, starting right now.

Letting go of the past is not always possible until we heal it. But, we can get out of the story and the old ideas by beginning this recovery process. That is what Step 2 is all about…being restored to sanity. You and I are not capable of that on our own.

That is why we have to “come to believe” and begin to crack the shell of Ego so that something else can come in. We will use denial in funny and interesting ways. “I have done too much bad/wrong/evil whatever in the world…blah, blah.” Or “I am too sick to ever get past that.” Blah, blah, it goes on and on. “You don’t understand the things that have happened to me.” Yeah, right!

So, the stories of healing and recovery are ALL miraculous! You know why? Because every butt in every chair had some kind of sob-sister story when they first began. The key is to allow Something Greater than YOU to come in and clean house.

Oh! Yeah! So stop telling your sob-sister story and focus on today…right now. Stop the denial and accept the Grace that gave you this day to shift the story to one of miraculous healing and recovery. It is an amazing process. The same Power that brought you to that chair can certainly re-write your story. Trust me, it happens every day…you are really NOT that different/special/precious/bad/unique…whatever word you want to put in there.

Telling yourself that same old tired story IS what the “insanity” is all about. Believing it is the insanity, keeping it the same for even one more day is more insanity. Staying stuck in that shit is more still. Stop the insanity and get on with letting Universal Power make another miracle happen for you today.

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
