ACCEPTANCE MONTH: DAY 2: “The four stages of acceptance:

1. This is worthless nonsense.

2. This is an interesting, but perverse, point of view.

3. This is true, but quite unimportant.

4. I always said so.”― J.B.S. Haldane

I laughed a this. I could not recognize my own voice in this, because the language was WAY calmer than what I usually employ. So fun!

But the path from denial to acceptance is something like this for everyone. Ego denies, spirit accepts. It is really simple like that.

Ego denies everything about life because it wants to be the originator and creator of things. It is not. Ego can only rule over what has gone on in the past because it has NO creative skills at all. It can only repeat the same patterns of attitude and behavior over and over again.

Spirit, on the other hand, is the open door to wonder and delight in life. It allows and accepts EVERYTHING because Spirit knows that nothing is amiss. Ego finds fault with EVERYTHING because its only function is to solve problems. Therefore, in order to remain the dominant voice, Ego must see all of life as a series of problems to be resolved. It does nothing, then, except resist and deny. It’s biggest and shiniest tool is FEAR.

Nothing in life  is gained by denial and resistance, and fear is something that is seldom useful.

When we are able to stifle Ego’s screaming voice, we can open ourselves to life more often and be present to it, rather than cowering in anxiety and fear all the time.

Fearing change deadens the heart and the soul because life is chronic, never-ending change. Energy shifting and swirling, without cessation, all the time. This is what the Universal Power created…LIFE!!! And to fear that is to die every minute of every day. We must learn to stop allowing Ego to run the show and ALLOW LIFE, embracing its twists and turns at every possible moment, so we can be showing up to the miraculous and beautiful flow of situations and lessons that come to teach us about why we are walking around on this marble. There is always more to learn and know. And it is fascinating and wonderful and lovely!

Let go of the stories around this and walk freely with Spirit! It is a beautiful way to BE!

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
