FREEDOM MONTH: DAY 30: “The man afflicted by hunger for power or money for its own sake is just that: afflicted. He is tormented by incessant desires for more without cause. He is the most likely to wear a social mask to succeed, and thus he is always unsure of himself and his life, the deep tear inside always causing him to obsess about how to get more, why he doesn’t have it already, and whom he will have to please or become in order to get it.” ― Brendon Burchard
This, sadly, describes the vast majority of people I know. Their insecurity and inadequacy and unlovability is distressing to witness.
Many of us grow up with these feelings and beliefs in our inherent inadequacy, etc. However, mature development means that we have individuated and become confident in our own abilities, worthiness and self. We no longer need so much validation from the world around us, nor do we seek fame and fortune as symbols of our interior success. They are not necessary.
In the Western culture, this is so challenging to comprehend. We are constantly bombarded with the message that only material and physical symbols give us success. Beauty, money, homes, cars, the most “stuff” are the signs we use to achieve what we believe will bring us happiness and love.
Yet, we are the most depressed, sad, lonely, and suicidal culture on the planet. Hmmm…wonder why? The lie is that these are the earmarks of happiness. Ever travel? People who live in tiny huts, with little or nothing to show for their material wealth are the happiest in the world. Interesting, isn’t it?
The spirit is the seat of happiness and adequacy. Understanding our role in the world, being of immense service to the Universe, and loving without pay is the source of all happiness. The drive to achieve fame and fortune is the deepest threat to our fulfillment and joy.
Of course we are the most addicted, depressed and unhappy creatures on the planet, forced to fight wars and kill others to get what we believe will fill the hole. What a terrible world to inhabit. And what a terrible message to teach our children. Beg, borrow, steal, kill and destroy to get what you believe you need in a world that is fruitful and abundant enough for all of us. So sad, may you quickly give it all away in the firm understanding that you cannot GET enough to be happy, it is a matter of what you GIVE. The lesson has been the same for thousands of years, yet we refuse to see the truth. Freedom is when we do and we walk the path it leads us to. I love my freedom!
