LOVE MONTH: DAY 19: “Throw your dreams into space like a kite, and you do not know what it will bring back, a new life, a new friend, a new love, a new country.” ― Anais Nin

This is really more about Step 3 than it is Step 12, but we also manifest a powerful statement when we can give the Universe permission to do whatever it will with us anyway.

And, it is much easier for me to put my problems into the hands of a Power when I have put my dreams there too. We all know how to set goals and do the footwork of reaching them. There are hundreds of books about that. And the footwork is absolutely necessary. In my life, a lot of times the outcomes are not what I thought they would be.

That is where my faith comes in. If I KNOW, deep inside, that I am beloved and cherished by that Power, then all is going to be right. I only get there after the fact sometimes, at least so far. I can see, looking back, why things turn out differently than I had believed they would. The goals I set are sometimes not met in direct fashion.

So, I really love this quote. Always have loved Anais Nin, she had the life of an outlaw for her day and time. I always respect someone who swims apart from the rest of the fish. I have had my dreams come back with all of those things. I never know.

I recognize the longings that my soul has and allow them to open me up to the next thing. And, in the process, many other things may come. I love that. And, if you don’t understand how this applies to Love Month, it is because we have to always know that by the time we have rigorously worked and lived these 12 steps, we have found Love. Not romantic or passionate love, but the love that created us to be who we are and what we are, doing what is in front of us to do.

THAT Love. It is wonderful and big and shiny and sparkly and warm and restful and peaceful and joyful and beautiful. All of that. And, in this process, I begin to accept that love, because I finally recognize the love of ME that I can carry in my heart when the head is conquered; at least for a moment at a time. I will manifest THAT love into things that others can recognize as LOVE, not self-recrimination and abuse or control or manipulation. Just love; but that is the only thing we are here to do. Just love. Action and passive acceptance…verb and noun and all of it. Yay!

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
