ACCEPTANCE MONTH: DAY 27:
“Is there anything I can do to make myself enlightened?
As little as you can do to make the sun rise in the morning.
Then of what use are the spiritual exercises you prescribe?
To make sure you are not asleep when the sun begins to rise.” — Anthony DeMello
We are here to have that kind of spiritual experience. One where we understand that we are never going to be able to run the show, even our own lives.
This is preparation for the “idea” that this is not our function here. That we can begin to find an outside Source for our lives. To make some kind of sense of it all. That the next step is where we will open the door to the possibility that there is something, somewhere with a plan.
Then, that we get to adapt our thinking to include THAT plan into our moment by moment experience of life. We will never get the full plan laid out. That is not how it works.
But, when we begin to think we have the blueprint and become complacent with what is going on, we get to have these tremendous reminders that the moments are what matters, not the blueprint.
There is no goal to achieve. There is only HERE AND NOW.
There is no past to hang on to. There is only HERE AND NOW.
There is nothing to do that we will not be given what we need to act on. There is only HERE AND NOW.
We continue to let go of knowing. We continue to breathe. We continue to remain without Power. And there is only HERE AND NOW.
If we are present in this moment, we are doing what is necessary. We stop the sleep-walking of our days, convinced that it is “same shit, different day,” and see that we are on this amazing journey, and the most important moment is HERE AND NOW.
We cannot save up spiritual experience to guard us against that rainy day that may turn into a deluge; but we CAN learn to live in the moment and recognize how each moment is perfectly suited to bring us to the moment that follows. This is such miraculous stuff that most of us miss it.
As we go through these steps, we learn to drop the baggage of what we think so we can drop the behavior that we believe is serving us best. As we learn to do THAT, we are given new ideas and attitudes and beliefs. Whatever these are, they will always keep us mindful that the only thing we have is HERE AND NOW. Isn’t that amazing?
