DISCIPLINE MONTH: DAY 11: “You will know as much of God, and only as much of God, as you are willing to put into practice.” ― Eric Liddell

We are here to have a spiritual connection/relationship with that Power that graced us with a moment of clarity (also known as “bottom”).

So, the work we do is directly influenced by how strong our desire is to know that Power and to have the kind of relationship we are looking for.

I am a great fan of Rumi and a couple of other ancient Persian poets. Rumi especially speaks so beautifully of love that most people think he means the kind of love that we all look for in partnership with a person. That isn’t so.

His poems are all written to the God he worshipped. And they are such amazingly beautiful testaments to his deep devotion and love. Wonderful to read.

There is a deep longing in our hearts that many of us believe is the desire for partner/mate and that kind of love. It isn’t. It is for the kind of relationship that we can have in recovery if we are persistent in the search for that Power.

We are given the instruction manual and each step of the way to that relationship. But, as addicts, many of us will do the half-measure thing for years and years. It may not be that we relapse into active addiction again; I know quite a few.

But the quality of our relationship with that Power is so shallow. I cannot live with that! I demand, as I used to with drugs and alcohol, the highest and the best there is. I want the most I can get. A true piggy of the good stuff I am.

So, I do deep work and get deep results. I know how unhappy it is to not understand this process. We get so ego-based on getting the right job, the right home, the right relationship and that never, ever comes. Then we are stuck with ourselves; and, if we are truly lucky enough to be forced to do so, we will get to see ourselves in the mirror of life.

When that happens, we begin to get it that life is going to be unhappy as long as we refuse to put our full effort and will into this thing. Full effort and will.

Then, wow! No matter how it begins to unfold, we WILL see how it works. We WILL know that it is going to be miraculous. It is up to us!

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
