FREEDOM MONTH: DAY 15: “Expose yourself to your deepest fear; after that, fear has no power, and the fear of freedom shrinks and vanishes. You are free.”― Jim Morrison

By the time we reach a certain age, we have lived through most of the fears of our younger days. That is a good thing.

After some time in recovery, we will have learned that Ego is the basis of fear. There is truly nothing in this or any other world to fear. Ego makes up dangers and projects them into our daily lives to gain control of what we would otherwise experience as a spiritual life.

Not to say that we should throw caution to the wind. There is a certain amount of caution we must learn to exhibit in our lives. But free-floating fear at all times creates nothing but anxiety and terror. It is for no good purpose. And that is the work of Ego.

A spiritual path will teach us that change is ever-present, never-ending and nothing to fear. It is out of our control, which is what Ego is so afraid of. Therefore, we can be assured that our spiritual life is going to be less and less about personal control and more and more about spiritual faith in that Power.

When we gain this faith, we are truly free to just live, all the time, without fear. That does not mean, like I said that we do not use caution, or as my Granny called it, “good old-fashioned common sense.”

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
