HUMILITY MONTH: DAY 29: “If you do something nice, do it quietly.”― Frank Sonnenberg
I was taught this by a really mean sponsor…you know her. I talk about her a lot. She went to mean sponsor school and graduated at the TOP of the class! She used to make me do things for others that were incredibly mean…sat up at night and dreamt them up as torture, I am sure. It was the best part of my relationship with her, as I see it today.
I could not tell anybody what I was doing for other people. Sometimes the person did not even know. I know today how powerful her teachings were. I am quite often able to see what others need to have done without them even seeing it. I can help older neighbors with shopping or yard work or office things that I know how to do which may not be in their wheelhouse. I can walk their animals since I am out every day walking and hiking. So many things. And I do them all cheerfully, graciously and anonymously, when possible, because that is what I was taught.
I don’t see others I know doing service. They just don’t. And I know that is one of the reasons I get what they don’t. That sense of connection to the universe that they don’t have.
Service is also about taking care of the planet I live on. I always have pockets for trash I see, sometimes a bag when I go on long walks. I have a small backpack I wear to carry trash in. Just for trash. And I am richly blessed to see what others most often never get to see because I am focused on the beauty and the things my planet may need from me. Gifts are exchanged, as I see it. Call it karma or what goes around comes around, whichever you like, but I get what I give. That is Universal Law, and it is one I am happy to obey.
