HUMILITY MONTH: DAY 13: “Humility is simply the disposition which prepares the soul for living on trust.”― Andrew Murray

If we don’t lose our dependence on Ego, we are doomed to live a very unhappy, fear-based life. We will spend so much time being in doomed relationships, playing the victim of so many situations, working our butts off trying to control and manipulate others and life to fit our way of thinking.

These are the ways we strove to live in alcohol and drug-induced states. Removing drugs and alcohol changes nothing…NOTHING. We can delude ourselves all we want that life is great without them. And this is true, but it is merely the preparation for Step 1. It isn’t even a step. Just the preparation for a spiritual path.

And so many settle for that. They have never gained access to that place the BB talks about being “rocketed into the fourth dimension.” You cannot get there without this work, this diligence of not just taking or working these steps, but continuously viewing ALL of life through these lenses of spiritual application. It is a lot. And we are really lazy people, who want the maximum bang for the minimum buck.

So we may talk a great game, but I know from personal experience, how many are suited up for practice and then the game itself. So few. It is so sad. And they may never relapse, just go on and on, miserable and pissy for life. I know hundreds of these people. They never lift their heads up from their focus on the ground. They do not dance or sing. They have so little joy it is sad. And they blame the world and God and life for their unhappiness. Again, an inside JOB…but any real JOB takes work. And it never, ever ends. We have to TRUST this process. But we also have to DO this process.

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
