INTEGRITY MONTH: DAY 28: “Do not be upset: all things follow the nature of the Whole, and in a little while you will be no one and nowhere. Concentrate on the matter in hand and see it for what it is. Remind yourself of your duty to be a good man and rehearse what man’s nature demands: then do it straight and unswerving. Always, though, in kindness, integrity, and sincerity.”― Marcus Aurelius

We are so self-involved that we forget that we are not such a big deal. It is good to stand back and see how little an impact we REALLY have on the world.

At best, I believe we are going to impact the lives of maybe a dozen people, maybe more. But such a small number that it really isn’t that big a deal.

And yet, some folks are going to spend hours obsessing over an outfit, a hairdo or haircut, what kind of couch to buy, and so on, ad nauseum. Does it matter? Not really.

I get so caught up in the minutiae of life sometimes that I can go crazy over what to eat for dinner or lunch. Really? Yeah, Ego is all about that stuff.

What we really want to focus on each day, to my mind, is the kindness we can extend, the gratitude we not only feel but express, the way we decide on those decisions mentioned above. Is it a good choice for the environment? Have we made good use of what we have before we consume more stuff? Are we doing things just to impress and win others over?

What we do is not always as important as how we do it….and always with “kindness, integrity, and sincerity.”

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
