ACCEPTANCE MONTH: DAY 9: “The experience of mystery comes not from expecting it but through yielding all your programs, because your programs are based on fear and desire. Drop them and the radiance comes.”― Joseph Campbell

When I let go of all expectations, all my list of things I “want”, and all my fears, I would be so blissful and filled with joy. It has never happened with ALL of them, but I know when I cling to control of life and the things that happen around me, I am miserable.

Years of letting go of control of people has been so beautiful, and yet; when I teach others what to do in order to achieve this level of peace, they are completely unwilling to do it. They have so many stories around why they are the only one who can possibly care for that person or situation. And I ask them what will happen when they die. What???!!! We are all going to leave, and when we do, it is best if we can be at peace that we left things behind us with love and joy.

Those are not present when we are setting the stage, controlling the outcomes, and fighting life with all our might for mastery of OUR will. Yikes!

Step 1 tells us about who we are…powerless addicts…whether we are addicted to control, drugs, alcohol, being right, being the only true savior, whatever story we have. Powerless…period. Learning to allow the Universe to rule everything, since it does, except in our mind is key to being happy, joyous, and free. All the time. No matter what.

We are not the victims of life. Most people do not know this. We are victims of Ego…and thinking that we are here to direct and control our lives. Good luck! It kicks my ass when I get into the driver seat. I am happy to relinquish all thoughts of dominating life…of controlling outcomes with manipulation and fear. No thanks! Today is a mystery…a yielding of all that I think I know…and the radiance is on its way.

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
