GRATITUDE MONTH: DAY 10: “I win every time I’m bold in how I love. I want to say I win a hundred times a day, a thousand, by loving the sunrise, and the wind, and the way raindrops sound on my window”― Mia Sheridan

Reading this new quote this morning, I had a bit of an AHA! moment. That came when I realized that to be grateful, I must be mindful. To be mindful, I must be grateful. I have to live fully in each moment, inhabiting whatever is going on NOW in order to recognize the beautiful moments that come and go so quickly in our lives.

I cannot be focused on the past or daydreaming about the future, the only places Ego goes, if I want to be focused on this moment and not miss the beauty and miracles all around me. It is so important to know what I want. I want this beauty and miraculous life. It has called to my heart and spirit forever. I get to inhabit the realm of my choosing. Ego or Heart?

Well, that is simple, isn’t it? I cannot help but be amazed and sit in wonder when I am present to all that life has to offer. I see and feel and touch and smell and hear and taste life full force in mindful gratitude. What a tremendous gift! It is what this world is truly all about.

While I do have things to do and be and perform, it is necessary in order to enjoy each moment of that process or I am missing out on the joy of living. I have a great deal of joy. Isn’t that a bonus for a junkie and a drunk? Absolutely! Step 11 is all about learning to sit with Universal Power. Learning to listen for what is happening in the universe around me. Never asking, just saying Thank You again and again and again. I even have a song to sing in gratitude, a great gift from my most dynamic sponsor so many, many years ago. Wow! I really AM God’s favorite kid!

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
