HUMILITY MONTH: DAY 17: “Selflessness is humility. … humility and freedom go hand in hand. Only a humble person can be free.”― Jeff Wilson

I have written a lot about being free from impressing myself or others lately. That is humility. I don’t need for you to like me.

What I need is to love myself, and in extension, I can love you, no matter whether you like me or not. It does not matter.

My spiritual development depends on me being able to encompass more often the concept of love in every situation in my little world. When I live in fear, I judge, condemn, compare and contrast, dislike and demean others to be okay with me. I don’t feel good when I do that. It is does not serve anyone or anything except Ego.

If you have not noticed this, Ego is a bottomless pit where nothing is ever enough. Ever. We are like that. I have been like that for so much of my life that I recognize how awful it feels when I am in that space again. It happens.

So, I have to love you, no matter what. I have to love me no matter what. That is the work of a lifetime, so far. And when I can do that, I can serve you with joy and love, not from a place of Ego. That is freedom. And it is beautiful.

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
