LOVE MONTH: DAY 3: “We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.”― Walter Mosley

I love this! I love the idea that we change, and the world is altered by that. I believe it! If the flapping of a single butterfly’s wings can alter the climate of the world, then of course, our changes do incremental shifts in the Universe.

And loving each other is the goal, is it not? Every single spiritual tradition ever devised by man has proclaimed it to be the goal. Not to conquer each other in war or fighting over religious dogma or oil or land or resources, but to love each other. Period. Completely and without distinction or prejudice or rules or that religious dogma we seem to need to justify our actions. Just to accept completely and totally who we are and to pass that along to each other. What a great thing that would be!

And yet, none of the dogma or political rhetoric has done anything of the kind. In fact, it drives a deeper and stronger dagger into the hearts of as many people as possible. Becoming more and more exclusionary and divisive. This is not the goal. This is not the point. We are not here to impose our beliefs on each other, nor to force ourselves and our views on anyone. We are here to learn and lean into each other, support each other, even with all our differences and blend into each other in ways that are loving, kind and compassionate. Isn’t THAT what a spiritual experience and path would be?

I think so, yet I am sure that is considered heresy by many and insane by so many others.

I am certain, however, that LOVE is just that. Heretical to those whose dogma loves only one color of skin or one way of belief. Insanity to those who believe they are more worthy, due to the amount of money in their bank accounts, of God’s salvation than those without that level of income and resources. And also to those who believe that only one type of person or group is to be loved and not colonized or overcome and ruled.

Indeed, many are trapped in this dynamic. Many more than not. Yet I would love to open every door locked and shuttered on every heart, to the changes that would bring about the “breaking of the sky.” I think it would be like that, too. What a great idea!

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
