GRATITUDE MONTH: DAY 26: “Sometimes life knocks you on your ass… get up, get up, get up!!! Happiness is not the absence of problems, it’s the ability to deal with them.”― Steve Maraboli

And problems are seldom what we think they are. I don’t have any problems today. All I have is LIFE in big, crazy bold capital letters. I love it like that. I want to have a great big life that thrills and excites me. And I do. I never know how the things I plan to do will come off.

That is both beautiful and scary sometimes. But, I would never want to go back to a life that is so predictable and safe that I feel like I am living in “Groundhog Day.” That was a pertinent and important movie because its message was pertinent and important.

We all get to deal with life on the terms created by that Power. There is nothing personal or degrading for any of us. It is all just life. Some lives are spent in poverty and others are spent in wealth. Some are spent in illness and some are spent with robust health. How we handle these situations is the spiritual process we are here to learn. If we knew all about it, it would not be our experience at this time and in this place. The best we can EVER do is to thank that Power for ALL of it. We don’t get to say if things are good or bad, right or wrong, black or white. We just get to DO it all.

That is so cool! I used to say thank you every day for the fact that we are not all in the shit at the same time. I can always talk to someone who is going through a scary time and then talk to someone else who is on top of the world at that moment. We are all in this thing, doing our best to get along and get through and live.

Some of us are doing more spiritually activities than others. But we never, ever know what that means, until it is our day to go through something. I love that there is always someone I can talk to who has gone through something similar to my experiences on any given day. How we do it is the path we are here to navigate and learn. I have gotten up a LOT of times. A lot. And I seldom see myself as I walk through these things. But I get to know what is up when I write my morning gratitude letter and journal. That allows me to sit still and meditate on what comes up from those writings. Powerful stuff, and I hope I never ever go back to the person who forgets to say thank you to the Universal Power every day for each and every moment of life so far. It is the most powerful medicine I have ever known.  YAY!!!

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
