FREEDOM MONTH: DAY 2: “It is ordained in the eternal constitution of things, that men of intemperate minds cannot be free. Their passions forge their fetters.” ― Edmund Burke
For addicts, this is easy to see. We have the mistaken notion that, once we lay down the drugs and alcohol, we are free of this condition.
But the beginning is at this point. We begin to free our minds and hearts when we stop drinking and drugging. We begin the process of becoming free of the demon Ego (Screaming Purple Monkey-SPM). Until we see how dogged our egos are in running us into hell, we have no freedom at all. We will die a thousand deaths to Ego, until we truly lose it in working toward that spiritual life the steps are here to provide for us.
When we begin to lose all sense of self and gain only the sense of Spirit, we are Free! We are imprisoned by bias and hatred and fear and running after one thing and then another in our attempts to satisfy the insatiable Ego. It screams and we jump…work harder, longer, more. Get more of this or that thing, or less of me. Nothing will stop it.
And everything that is not of Ego will seem to be a problem. We judge and weigh and measure everyone and everything in this horrible attempt to quiet the unquietness of our busy lives and busy minds. The busier we are, the more Ego is involved in running the show.
And too much is never enough…never…enough. That phrase from the BB about “Chronic malcontent” is what we are and what we remain until we let go of 10,000 things, 10,000 ideas, 10,000 excuses and stories for WHY we must remain on this stupid path of Ego.
This is what Mr. Burke refers to as our intemperate minds. We lust and long for those things we don’t have and become instantly dissatisfied with them, should they appear. We believe more money, more fame, more sex, more love, more house, more travel, more car, more clothing, more of whatever we think the solution is will fix it all. We see nothing but problems and believe these will resolve them.
And the truth is this…there are no problems. There never were. There is nothing needed. It is all perfect, right here, right now. We must begin to shift this belief system, moment-by-moment, day-by-day, to find the perfect Center of the Universe, located…drumroll…inside US!
The Center of everything lies within us…the perfect hiding place from Ego, whose only view is outward to things and places and people who lie in unreachable territory! Oh!
And we must reconcile, first ourselves, and then with others, these basic truths to stop being such greedy, monstrous assholes, demanding and hating everyone and everything for OUR unsatisfied lusts and wants and unquenchable thirsts for MORE. Wow! Isn’t that amazing? I think so.
THIS is the journey we are beginning. Just barely beginning. It is tremendous and beautiful and perfect.
