PATIENCE MONTH: DAY 6: “With every kind of waiting, you unconsciously create inner conflict between where you don’t want to be (now) and where you want to be (the projected future). Give up waiting as a state of mind. When you catch yourself slipping into waiting, snap out of it. Come into the present moment. Just be, and enjoy being. If you are present, there is never any need for you to wait for anything.” ― Eckhart Tolle

We all experience this as truth if we practice for any time at all. Waiting for life to happen destroys life. It cannot be done.

It is an immature (very!) approach to living. We do this as children when we count down the days till our birthdays, Christmas, or some other desired event. What happens? We lose all the days in-between, because we forget to focus on the day we are in, as it is happening for and to us.

It is also the cause of ALL anxious thought processes and produces a state of mind known to us as “restless, irritable and discontent.” Oh yeah!

When we are centered and living in the moment we are currently IN, we are calm and at peace. This is the only truth we need to remember to live happily. It means we are not in need of anything more than what is here at this moment.

The truth is that this is always going to be the truth. We ARE NEVER IN NEED OF ANYTHING MORE THAN WHAT IS HERE AT THIS MOMENT.

Even in ill health, we are right where we are supposed to be. To miss that is to have missed out on another piece of our own lives. We will have missed out on a significant event. This is the greatest and most common complaint of everyone at the end of their lives…”I missed so much.” Well, duh!

There is nothing going on anywhere else, at any other time; past, present, or future, that we need to attend to. Just this moment, and now this one. What are you producing in this moment that can increase your happiness in the next one? Just breathe and smile and treat yourself gently and with love. That is all there is. The rest is a story you made up to serve your ego. No need to shift or change or do anything else. Be here, pay attention.

Stop waiting. Be here  NOW…it is the secret to the happiest life there can be.

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
