INTEGRITY MONTH: DAY 30: “The willingness to reach inside every part of yourself opens the door to total understanding. You place your entire identity on the line, not just an isolated part. This may sound daunting, but actually it’s the most natural way to approach any situation. When you hold some part of yourself in reserve you deny it exposure to life; you repress its energy and keep it from understanding what it needs to know.” ― Deepak Chopra

There are parts of me that were held back for very long periods of time. They seemed painful to me, and uncomfortable to talk about or deal with. Quite frankly, I did not always know that they were there until they revealed themselves. This is the journey.

I was always willing to let them out, just did not know how. Some of the deepest healings I needed took 30 years around here. And I was doing all the work. I knew of these events, just not the healing journey that was going to come in future times. Being willing is one thing. I know today that I could not have touched on the healing of deeper issues until I was ready and able.

The Universe will not give us work to do that is beyond our capabilities to accommodate. While I had full understanding that there were big issues around my life, I did not know the true extent of the work or how to begin. It had to unfold in the amazing ways that it did for me. I have worked with a lot of trauma survivors and adults with a lot of abuse issues. Their work is as deep as it can be at any point. We can only go where we are capable of going at any time.

Then more will be revealed, and deeper work is possible. A few weeks ago a young lady with about 3 years of recovery told me she was healed completely! Wow! She did the steps twice and knew she would not need any further work. Okay! I just told her to keep coming back,  just in case.

So, we open all the doors and windows and let the sunshine in and let the wind blow through those dusty old ideas and the past we brought with us into this deal. The truth is that so many are deeply scarred and hurt by life and their beliefs about the events leading to their recovery. When they are able and healing can be brought into it, it will be. Until then, we just do this thing one day at a time, working on being willing for the real work of healing to come when we are armed with what we need to do it all. More is always revealed. These steps are amazing and lead us to the places where our spirits and hearts can be unburdened and free! I love that!

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
