COURAGE MONTH: DAY 29: “Each mistake teaches you something new about yourself. There is no failure, remember, except in no longer trying. It is the courage to continue that counts.” ― Chris Bradford

Although I do not believe in the word “mistake” I know that some folks do. We hear it all the time. I truly adopt the notion that “nothing, absolutely NOTHING, happens in God’s world by mistake.” Therefore, the word is out of my vocabulary.

We make choices in life, that give us two roads to walk down. Either road is the path we are meant to be on, or the choices would not present themselves to us. I really know this to be true. Even those two roads are there for us to walk. Either way, we learn. Either way, we walk.

If we keep going down the same roads and expect to get to new destinations, we are doomed to a life of despair and frustration. We always have this choice.

And going down a road of some kind is all we can do. Even sitting in our shit, drinking and drugging or not, is still a choice and still a road. How do I know? Because those roads brought us home, to this moment and this time and this day and this place.

All roads will lead home. Some of them empower our spirit and some do not. But they are always there and always our roads.

We cannot fail because we are here to do whatever we are doing. It is all perfect. I love that! It takes away so much of the pressure of being “superhuman,” which is the alcoholic way for many of us. We think we have to excel at everything to get even with the rest of the world, having come from so far behind and all, you know.

It is terrible to be so sure that we are such dismal failures, like God didn’t really create us in His image or something. Like that could happen. How arrogant is that? And yet, nearly every addict or alcoholic I have ever met is riddled with this incredible insufficiency and inadequacy. Riddled with it. So self-absorbed and arrogant!

Of course, this is another way of playing God. We decide it is all wrong and we critique and criticize US and believe it is what these steps are here to do. Yeah, NO!!! We are here to be humbled by the enormity of the love this Universe has in store for us…where there is NO failure and no mistakes and NO possibility of us not being the most beautiful and wonderful and lovely and lovable persons ever. NO Possibility of that NOT being the case.

Wow! Life is beautiful! Too bad we choose to view it in such f—-d up ways that we are in chronic pain and anguish, and then we blame it on God!

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
