LOVE MONTH: DAY 5: “The highest function of love is that it makes the loved one a unique and irreplaceable being.”― Tom Robbins
We are all this to someone…perhaps to many someones. We are this to family when we are children, and most often, for life. Then to friends and others with whom we share time and life. Then to those whom we partner with, and then to the children we may have. And the cycle continues, on and on.
The sadness of our dysfunctional and often non-functional social order is that we have so many conditions and rules and broken forms of love being taught and learned and practiced and handed on for so many generations.
And that is where our culture has become so broken. We worship and adore things over souls. We worship and adore and spend our lives chasing status and money and possessions at the cost of those whom we claim to love. The connection that makes those persons dear, unique, and irreplaceable are broken and full of holes.
That is how the “highest function” becomes dysfunctional or completely non-functional. Wouldn’t it be lovely to achieve the purpose of Step 12, having a spiritual connection with that Power and then, with all that Power’s creations? This is the idea. To learn to not only function as humans again, but to learn how to live at the highest of all functioning. In a state of love that makes all life unique and irreplaceable, not just the small circle we embrace as “ours”.
