DISCIPLINE MONTH: DAY 19: “True discipline is really just self-remembering; no forcing or fighting is necessary.” ― Charles Eisenstein

We must treat ourselves, our friends and family, our relationships, and life itself as if it were a precious thing. Each moment, each person, every experience, fleeting and cherished.

When we do this, we are seeing and acting from a place of strength and discipline. We are recognizing the temporary nature of all that is. Every time we welcome life into our experience, no matter what is happening, we are saying goodbye at the same time.

Welcome! Hello! Nice to see you today…Goodbye! Thank you! That was beautiful! Life is so rapidly passing…we must jump into the parade before it passes completely.

If we embrace, truly embrace, life, we will be disciplined without having to think about it. We will treat it well and not need to cleanup anything.

When we cherish a person, a pet, a car, no matter what we truly cherish; we take good care of it and treat it well and with respect. That is what cherishing IS. If I do that with myself, I show the world I know how to cherish. It cannot be that way with anything or anyone until it is that way with ME.

When I do it with others, I will not need to continuously clean up messes between us. I will cherish you truthfully, honorably and with all my heart.

So many of us have toxic love in our hearts and do not take care of ourselves, our relationships, friends or family, and life. We are entitled and selfish and greedy, thinking there is no price tag on what we are doing and that someone else will do the work of cleaning it all up. That is an attitude of addiction.

When I remember, truly remember, the precious nature of my being, I treat me well. When I remember, truly remember, the precious nature of friends and family, I treat them well. When I remember, truly remember the precious nature of relationships, I practice good skills of treating them well. This is life, I hold life dear, embracing and cherishing and sharing it and being IN it.

What a great gift! When I do this, I find that I have little to clean up. It is easy and good and fine and I am happy. Truly happy…it is WONDERFUL to be cherished!

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
