FREEDOM MONTH: DAY 6: “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” ― Nelson Mandela

YES!! We do this recovery thing, finding that we multiply our own beliefs and expand our own experiences ONLY when we share it with others. This can be in meetings or one on one (my personal favorite!); but we only get what we give. It is amazing!

The longer we are around this thing, the more open we become to allowing others to do what they do in exactly the ways that most benefit their growth and development. As long as they are not harming themselves or others, we back off and let them have their own journey.

This is our path, to learn to drop judgments and accept life and everyone in it for being perfect exactly where they are and when they get there.

I am free to practice spiritual principles in the way that suits my journey; and will allow you the same benefits. That is the contract we have, not only as recovering individuals, but as humans.

I have worked a lot of different types of amends, only because I did various types of harms to others. I want to heal the relationships with others in ways that benefit their highest growth. That may not look like the way others do this. I can accept and allow that, I have to.

What we get to do here is pretty amazing, if you really look at it. While millions of other addicted souls are killing themselves by inches, we are recovering by inches. It is a constant in the Universe at all times; healing and dying.

I want to be on the healing side of the equation. I want to always be mindful that I must allow you to have the freedom to die by inches if that is your choice.

I will always be grateful for the wonderful growth and development of my personal recovery around here. That is the key, I have found, to remaining pliable and teachable and willing.

My willingness has never faltered. The more I do this, the more I want to do it again. It is, for me, a self-propelling and self-motivating process. Not everyone gets that.

The most wonderful part of this thing, for me, is sharing with all of you the life I have found here. It is so amazing and beautiful! I am in constant awe of what happens and how it unfolds. There is no end to the joy and the wonder of my days, weeks, months and years.

Today, I hope to walk through the gates of freedom with another addict who is trapped and dying from their addiction and does not know that freedom is here, where the steps lead.

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
