LOVE MONTH: DAY 15: “When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it–always.” ― Mahatma Gandhi
This is a quote I use almost every year. Why? Because it is pertinent all the time. This year, perhaps, more so than ever. The fear generated by a single person can be tremendous. Brought to mind, for me, are some of history’s biggest tyrants or bullies.
We all know them. I am mindful of what has been done in my life around the fear generated by those who wish to rule in the world on nearly any level.
That never works for long. Although it is a stretch, I believe that there is a Divine plan working through these events, no matter how horrible they are.
There are good people who act to offset what they see as wrong, although they feel powerless to stop it from happening. That is also something that has always been true.
I also understand that it is not up to me or any other individual, sometimes not any group of individuals, to say what is going to happen next in this world. There are no certainties, no guarantees, no promises given us by any Supreme Being that we are going to be always happy, safe and at peace with our lives.
What we do get in this thing is a promise that we can be at peace with what is going on in the world around us, when we are practicing right action, right speech, right thinking and not participating in the discomfort and fear that is generated by that discomfort.
And, perhaps I will be given the blessing of seeing what is unfolding in a new light at some point in time. I do not always understand how people do what they do. I just know that only a tiny, tiny portion of what goes on in the world is my business. Tiny! In fact, the small square footage of where my feet are planted at any given time.
I often think it should be more that I am responsible for, in fact, a great deal more. But that is not how it works. This quote reminds me that I may be afraid, but there is nothing I am supposed to do, except walk through that fear in a state of acceptance and faith.
That is the hardest task we are asked, I do believe. It is, however, the beginning task for everything that comes after.
Step 1 is all about Acceptance. Period. And when we get into acceptance, life is so much easier. I quit driving all the cars on the freeway and do my best job of driving mine. I quit running the lives of family and friends and re-focus my time and energy on what is happening in my life and what the hell am I up to when I want to look around at others?
I quit running the world and work to let it be the work of much more qualified others, beginning with the Supreme Creator who can and will do just fine without my input. I remember it is not my job to understand or approve, just accept. That brings peace to me in any situation and despite any storm. I can relax and get on with my own work.
I really believe that the reason we are not good at politics or religion is we try to take over and run things the way WE see them. That is insanity! I have not yet anyone who is qualified to do this kind of work, especially in the rooms of recovery! I think; therefore, it is important for us to remember that there is a Power running the Universe like a well-oiled clock, according to a plan we know nothing about. Then we can see how amazing life really is, because it is run on LOVE and by LOVE.
