COURAGE MONTH: DAY 3: “When we least expect it, life sets us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happened or in saying that we are not yet ready. The challenge will not wait. Life does not look back.” ― Paulo Coelho

When we least expect it…yeah…that is so true. What I was taught when new around here is that I am to do what is in front of me so the Universe has a clear path to my life. When I am hanging on to old ideas, old ways of being, old ways of believing, old habits, etc., there is no room for the Universe to create the new miracles I seek.

The new stuff looks scary and completely crazy sometimes, but my heart is always full of the knowledge that THIS is the thing I have been waiting for! The crazier, the better, from where I sit. Because, although I have a great deal of creativity in me, I still cannot come even close to those miracles the Universe has kicked into my life. They mostly always come when I am least expecting them. Something tells me that THIS is the thing that is going to completely change the conversation…and it does…and my life shifts into a whole new direction, just like that!

There is no way to describe the feeling and inner knowing that we get when we know. And I love what Mr. Coelho wrote about there being ‘no point in pretending that nothing has happened’, because there is such a sense of possibility in the impossible things the Universe has sent me! A sense of synchronistic evolution that cannot be denied; like the stars have lined up to arrange themselves in a new display, just for me…and they kind of have.

Sometimes I am reluctant to share these things with others, because they sound a bit crazy; but I have learned to do it anyway. We all need to know that miracles exist…anyone else walk around singing the song, “All I need is a miracle”? I do it all the time. Because, as Marianne Williamson says, we all need and want a miracle, which is only a shift in consciousness.

I also ascribe to her belief that everything is a miracle. All the time, every moment, there are miraculous events happening if only we pay attention to them. I was recently looking for a new iris bulb for my garden, or maybe several; because I dug up and relocated the ones I have. I kept seeing white irises, which is something I have never had. They appealed to me, and I earmarked them for later purchase, if the funds came available.

There were 6 irises that did not get dug up in the recent relocation process, and one of them began to bud up a few days ago. This morning, it opened and is pure, pure white! I have never had one, did not buy one, did not plant, one; but there it is! I call this a miracle, and am so happy…this happens for me a lot.

A few weeks ago, there was a stunning new swallowtail butterfly in my yard, and it (or it’s family) have been back several times since. Yesterday I found a caterpillar that is going to give me another generation…I protected him and moved him to a safe place to eat and become a chrysalis. I love this! Life is full of miracles, wonderful ones! I am so rich in these experiences and so joyful when I see them!

What are some of the miracles in your life today?

I am a therapist and counselor with long-term recovery from addictions and personal trauma. My writing reflects these experiences and the road I have traveled in 12-Step recovery settings, along with the work I have done for over 30 years in the field. My love of dolphins includes the stories of them being healers in places all over the world. I long to offer every broken spirit and body the experience of a healing hug. May my words and stories inform, uplift and delight your spirit and soothe your weary heart.
